Her creative nonfiction is published in The Rumpus, Pithead Chapel, Word Riot, the New York Times, Wilderness House, and other journals. Mary Ann’s young-adult novels, are ranked among the best books for teens by the Junior Library Guild and NY Public Library. Her novel Where You Belong was a finalist for the National Book Award.
