A 9/11 victim and long-term survivor of its hidden aftermath, Dr. Darren C. Skinner, also a U.S. Army Veteran, embodies a journey marked by profound pain, spiritual reckoning, and ultimate redemption. Although not inside the World Trade Center, Dr. Skinner was working nearby and remained in the affected area through December 2001—unknowingly exposed to the toxic dust and fumes that blanketed Lower Manhattan. Over time, he developed multiple 9/11-related medical conditions, both physical and emotional, which drastically altered the course of his life.
The trauma of that period led Dr. Skinner down a dark path—returning to alcohol and developing a dependency on prescribed opioid pain medications. What followed was a downward spiral of addiction, emotional turmoil, and deep despair. But his story does not end in tragedy—it transforms. Through faith, spiritual growth, and a fierce commitment to healing, Dr. Skinner rose from the ashes. His hard-won sobriety and recovery have become a foundation for hope, strength, and purpose. Writing poetry also became a deeply personal form of therapy—a way to process pain, reclaim identity, and find clarity amidst chaos. It was through this creative outlet that he began to truly heal. Today, he stands as a living testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome, to evolve, and to inspire. Dr. Skinner’s writing reflects this personal evolution. With raw honesty and heartfelt wisdom, he explores themes of suffering, resilience, and the search for serenity. This book is more than stories—it’s a lifeline for those navigating trauma, addiction, and the long road to recovery.
Dr. Skinner currently works for Footprints to Recovery in Hamilton, NJ where he works with Military and First responders seeking recovery.
